Our classes are provided by Henderson & Walton Women's Center's Nutrition/Diabetes Education Services.

Class Schedule:

Monday
9:00 am (every other Monday) - Weight Control Class
10:00 am (every other Monday) - Hypoglycemia Class
2:00 pm - Diabetes Class

Tuesday
10:00 am - Gestational Diabetes Class
2:00 pm - Pre-Diabetes Class

Wednesday
9:00 am (every other Wed) - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Class

Thursday
11:00 am - Cholesterol Class


Insurance usually covers diabetes education but other education sessions may not be covered by insurance. Patients should contact their insurance for all benefits.

Class Descriptions:

Cholesterol Education Class (1 session)

• Diet instruction including label reading for saturated fat and trans fat
  
• Interpretation of lab results as they relate to risk for heart disease
  
• Exercise recommendations
  
• Discussion of labs needed for follow-up
  
• Weight control recommendations

Diabetes Education Class (type 1 and type 2 Diabetes)
(4 sessions provided the first 6 months. Session 1 is a class with other patients; session 2-4 and 6-month follow-up sessions are one on one)

• Overview of diabetes causes and treatments as well as risk for complications
  
• Instruction of diet with emphasis on carbohydrate counting in meals and snack patterns (menus provided)
  
• Instruction of use of glucose meter (meter provided free to patient), including times for testing and glucose goals
  
• Prevention of complications (film and discussion)
  
• Instruction of cholesterol-lowering principles and explanation of cholesterol results
  
• Overview of lab results and the relationship of these results to risk for complications
  
• Exercise recommendations and benefits

Gestational Diabetes Class (1 session)

• Overview of gestational diabetes as to the possible complications for both fetus and mother
  
• Instruction of prenatal diet with emphasis on carbohydrate counting in meal and snack patterns (menus provided)
  
• Instruction on use of glucose meter (meter provided free to patient), including times for testing and glucose goals
  
• Follow-up readings from glucose meter at each prenatal visit
  
• Instruction for insulin therapy if so ordered by MD

Hypoglycemia Class (1 session)

• Interpretation of labs and explanation of implications to progress to type 2 diabetes
  
• Diet instruction with emphasis on attainment of healthy weight for height
  
• Exerciser recommendations
  
• Explanation of follow-up labs
  
• Cholesterol education

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Class (1 session)

• Diet and exercise instruction to allow recommended weight for height
  
• Discussion of medications ordered by MD
  
• Laboratory tests explanation and schedule to evaluate response

Pre-Diabetes Class (1 session)

• Interpretation of labs and explanation of possible progression to type 2 diabetes
  
• Diet and exercise instruction
  
• Explanation of medication (if ordered by MD)
  
• Discussion of follow-up labs and interpretation of same
  
• Cholesterol education to lower risk for heart disease

Weight Control Class (1 session)

• Diet recall of daily habits to identify sources of excess calories
  
• Recommendations to correct habits which allow excess weight
  
• Diet instruction for healthy habits and normalization of weight
  
• Exercise recommendations
  
• Cholesterol education
  
• Follow-up available for 1:1 evaluation, accountability and management
